Libertarians Call Foul On Nassau Coliseum Scheme

June 14, 2011

The Libertarian Party of New York and its Nassau
affiliate will fight Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano’s plan to fund renovation of Nassau Coliseum for the Islanders hockey team and build a new minor-league ballpark, according to Libertarian Party of New York Vice-Chair Richard Cooper, a Westbury resident. ‘We will organize a campaign to rally voters to reject the Mangano-Wang corporate welfare scheme in the
August 1st referendum. We reject the plan to benefit
Charles Wang. Libertarians call for the separation of sports and state.”
In May, Mangano proposed that the financially challenged county borrow up to $400 million for a new arena for the Islanders and construct a new ballpark. Cooper counters that Wang should finance his own renovations at his own expense. “Mangano has scored on his own taxpayers’ net.  Libertarians are for taxpayers all the time in opposing corporate welfare.”
Both Cooper, a Westbury business executive who previously served as both State and Nassau Libertarian Chair, and the state party have committed to spending to fight what he calls “ColiseumScam.” Cooper has already created a Facebook
group, called Stop Nassau Coliseum Funding. He promises more efforts to follow. Noting the ballpark aspect of Mangano’s plan he says, “Baseball teams should steal bases, not taxpayer dollars.”
